I’m thrilled to announce the launch of a significant milestone in the ongoing effort of making Ubuntu a target for app developers: the new Ubuntu App Developer site.

Developer.ubuntu.com should now be the central point of reference for any topics related to application development. From creation to publication: porting, sharing, contributing, finding information… a site that should grow organically to provide the tools, share the knowledge and act as the springboard to foster app proliferation and developer community growth in this exciting area.

Embracing the concept that for sustainable business development and wider adoption Ubuntu should provide the ability to purchase apps as well as to install open source software for free, the site has been developed with that exact idea in mind. In that regard, developer.ubuntu.com has been built upon the foundations of existing tools such as the Ubuntu Software Centre and My Apps to offer a unified and consistent journey for both open-source, non-commercial and commercial app authors.

A quick walk through the App Developer site

All sections of the site have been carefully designed upon research and user testing to provide a simple yet intuitive journey to app developers, from software creation to publication and distribution in the Ubuntu Software Centre. Here’s a quick guide:

  • Get started – an introduction to the recommended tools and the workflow for Ubuntu app development, including a video to kickstart new developers in less than five minutes.
  • Resources – a growing directory of resources to support app development in Ubuntu: reference documentation, guides, tutorials and more.
  • Publish – a simple guide to app publication in the Ubuntu Software Centre, including an extensive FAQ on how to publish commercial applications.
  • Community – the place to get involved, share and actively participate within a network of like-minded developers, including the app developer blog.
  • My Apps – an online tool to enable app developers go straight from a finished app to the Software Centre, making publication a seamless process.

Big thanks

In this project I’ve had the privilege of working with the Web Design team, who essentially made the site happen. It’s been a fun ride, and they’ve produced a truly stunning result in a very tight schedule. To them, and to many Canonicalers and other members of the Ubuntu family go the thanks for making developer.ubuntu.com possible.

Next steps

This is just the beginning. For all its current awesomeness, we are aware that the site needs to pass the test of a wider audience, adapt to their needs, and grow. Expect more developer.ubuntu.com discussions at the next Ubuntu Developer Summit in Orlando, Florida, where any community member can participate and contribute to the discussion of the future plans for the site.

In the meantime, there are two easy ways in which you can already start participating:

This is a very exciting and new territory for Ubuntu, and I’m thrilled to see all the progress we’re making in this area. This is going to be awesome.

This new site is very complete. It’s delightful to see how Ubuntu is improving and promoting FOSS. App development is crucial for FOSS world to grow and improve.

  2. Reverse Cowgirl Says:

Apps for sale? Good luck. Folks use Ubuntu because it is free as in beer (admit it). They’re not gonna ‘buy’ apps.

  3. Albert Says:

This is absolutely fantastic. There has always been a real need for centralized documentation for Linux application developers, and I think this alone will attract more independent software vendors to create stuff for Ubuntu.

The streamlined process for getting apps into the Ubuntu Software Centre is the other missing piece, and I’m excited to see that here as well. Canonical, you’re doing exactly what you should be doing – Leveraging the Ubuntu userbase to attract new software developers to your platform, and strengthening your platform’s software ecosystem by encouraging commercial apps.

It’s great to see Canonical giving commercial software developers equal access to the same distribution channels free/Free/open source applications have enjoyed on Ubuntu, and I think this will help further distinguish Ubuntu (from “Linux”) as a platform.

    Exciting times!

  4. foobar Says:

“distinguising Ubuntu (from “linux”) is exactly right, in the worst way because it isn’t about differentiation via adding value, it is about differentiation via fragmentation.

Not that linux isn’t fragmented already. It is and that is exactly one area where Ubuntu could differentiate in a positive way, by doing something about that by solidifying and standardizing development across linux. Instead they are increasing the problem.

In any case, I agree with Cowgirl. No one is paying for anything on the linux desktop. Admit it and deal with it.

Here’s an idea that is a better use of time: fix the f-ing ati drivers and make suspend/resume work. The desktop keeps changing (and breaking) but no one is fixing the biggest problem with linux is that it just doesn’t work because of poor hardware support for core features.

  5. sulfide Says:

    @cowgirl
Not sure I agree with that, there are plenty of high quality apps people would pay for. Take something as small as sublime text2, people even pay for that because its a quality tool.

    @foobar
Linux is supposed to be fragmented, each kernel tree that exists is a fork of vanilla; This is a good thing because it is why Linux is in so many places today. As for distributions the same applies, people have different needs and Linux allows them to satisfy each one the way that fits them best. Ubuntu clearly provides the best desktop for the majority and I see nothing wrong with that even if they have to break from the pack.. typically to make something high quality hard choices have to be made.

On another note I have a great idea for you: go fix the f-ing ati drivers and make suspend and resume work yourself. The idea behind open source and free software is that you can scratch your own itch. Yes hardware support especially graphics is one of the largest problems, but it’s also one of the most difficult and I don’t think disrespectful users like you realize just how much/hard work it really is. Do you think people making linux desktops don’t realize what the problems are? and you’re the all knowing prophet to bless them with this knowledge?

  6. Tom Says:

I’ll pay for a GIMP plugin that makes it easy to edit PSD files!

  7. Seth Schoen Says:

How does this relate to the Ubuntu philosophy

    http://www.ubuntu.com/project/about-ubuntu/our-philosophy

? For example, the assertion that Ubuntu is “continually working to ensure that every piece of software you could possibly need is available under a licence that gives you those freedoms”?

  8. MarkYA Says:

“They’re not gonna ‘buy’ apps.” << Where are you coming from? I use Linux, preferably Ubuntu, because it is my choice. I have a licensed version of XP and 7 and it is my choice too that it come with my computers and I am perfectly aware I can buy one without Windows. Am I supporting Microsoft more because I bought there products? No. I just don't want to promote piracy. Buy apps? Heck I've bought games for Linux. It is not a strange concept.

"Not that linux isn’t fragmented already." << You are absolutely right. So what are you talking about? Fantasizing about all of Linux distros "joining hands with each other", eh? Not that I am against that, but come on don't be naive. Be realistic. LOL! Nobody is forcing you to use any distro. Nobody is even forcing you to use Linux.

@MarkYA: “Fantasizing about all of Linux distros “joining hands with each other”, eh? Not that I am against that, but come on don’t be naive. Be realistic.”

From http://www.fedoraproject.org/:“We believe the hard work of creating new technical features makes free software more powerful, flexible, and useful for millions of people. We don’t mind shaking up the status quo, when it means we can more effectively move free software forward. And we do it by collaborating directly with the many software communities whose work is distributed by Fedora. That way everyone benefits, regardless of whether they use Fedora or not.”

It isn’t unrealistic at all. You’re thinking like a company developing a proprietary product, which is exactly how Canonical thinks. But they are doing it with other people’s software, not collaborating with upstream developers, not contributing back to those projects, and even attempting to dictate to them when to release their software to make it more convenient for Ubuntu.

Most Linux distributions are not directed by companies with delusions of world domination. They are developed independently of corporate concerns. But even Fedora, which is sponsored by Red Hat, has a generous reciprocal relationship with upstream developers.

@Scott: well, that quite simply isn’t true, but I guess you’re willing to ignore reality in order to criticise Canonical and Ubuntu. It seems to have become a sport in some communities. Otherwise, you’d certainly try to substantiate your claims, but you wouldn’t be able to, which is why you don’t. For instance, Zeitgeist is a major component in the future of Gnome and Gnome Shell, and is also collaborating with KDE for Nepomuk. Who’s creating it? http://zeitgeist-project.com/. Isn’t Canonical and Gnome supposed to be bitter enemies? Hmm, perhaps that’s a misconception, or even just a vicious rumor. Or what about DesktopCouch? Or what about the indicator mechanism that is available for Unity, LXDE, Xfce, KDE and any other environment, making it much easier for developers to support different DEs? Or Quickly, isn’t it useful to the free software community to have a very easy way to start writing software for GNU+Linux and other free operating systems?

And now, this evil empire is enabling free software developers to make some money on the programs they write in the massive market they’re creating. Canonical and Ubuntu must be stopped, otherwise we’ll soon see GNU+Linux everywhere… wait, isn’t that exactly what we all want?
